Back by popular request after her courses at Flute School London, international soloist Camilla Hoitenga returns for a workshop and master class on Saturday, 31 March 2012 10am-2pm at one of our favourite flute shops,

All Flutes Plus.

Performance Practice in the 20th/21st Centuries or "How to make old pieces sound brand new, and how to make brand new pieces sound convincing!"

A look at flute repertoire from Debussy to Saariaho, and from Varèse to Stockhausen and beyond....All pieces welcome. Performers are encouraged to bring not only repertoire they know but also a piece or two that is "brand new". Along the way we'll discuss techniques for deciphering scores, for using the breath in interpretation and for "dividing and conquering".

The globe-trotting flutist, known in particular for her recordings of the flute music of Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho, has been on the front cover of all international Flute Magazines, and has premiered many flute concertos throughout the world, including Sariaaho's Flute Concerto with the Royal Philharmonic in the UK.

"charismatic and exciting playing…all flautists should hear Hoitenga play." (Pan magazine)

"Camilla's teaching is warm and friendly, but focussed and to the point." (A.M., student)

"I found Camilla very “user-friendly”, wonderful teacher." (K.S, student)

"Inspiring! She really helped me to develop my my own ideas as well as to clarify the composer's intention." (S.G., student)

HAPPY 2009!!

Without having made any resolutions toward improving my "web presence" this year, I will at least begin with announcing the next musical activities:

Ultraschall Festival in Berlin

31 January 2009 -- 19:00 Sophiensaal
Concert with Hèloïse Dautry, harp
Music by Ton That Tîet, Pèter Koeszeghy, Kaija Saariaho, and Orjan Sandred

The piece by Sandred (a world premiere) is called "Whirl of Leaves" and is the most virtuosic work that we have tackled for a long time: whirls of notes, weeks and weeks of rehearsal....stay tuned!

1 February 2009 -- Haus des Rundfunks Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin
Wolfgang Lischke, conductor

Although this will be about my 17th performance of Saariaho's Aile du songe, it will my first with this conductor and orchestra. Also on the program are works by Saed Haddad, Malika Kishino & Fabian Panisell.

Preview: After the festival I'll begin preparing my own pieces, inspired by the ideas, procedures and paintings of the Finnish artist Raija Malka, all to be presented at her art opening:

7 March 2009 -- Helsinki

from Camilla...

Well, obviously my web-site issues are not yet sorted out, so here is some news:
December 6--last concert of season, in a series in Pforzheim (a city in southern Germany known for centuries for their production of fine jewelry). under the title of "fantasies and journeys", I'll be alternating Telemann Fantasias with modern music for flute and CD/live electronic (this part handled by composer and sound-projectionist Bryan Wolf) by some of my favorite composers: Anne LeBaron, Pèter Köszeghy, Bryan Wolf and Kaija Saariaho. I've had a special request from the producers to end with Debussy's Syrinx--gladly!

For more information, also about the program, check out this web address:
http://www.pz-news.de/kultur/konzerte/97193/

The first concert of 2008 will be another appearance at the festival "Music in the Houses of the City". This time I'll be cooking up something with the dancer/choreographer Rick Kam. The word "house" is used more to describe the ambience of the concerts rather than the venues. We, for example, will be performing in the not-yet-completed new space being built for Microsoft near the Rhine river. (January 20, 2 p.m.).

All for now--Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
